There are two main stock exchanges in India and they are NSE ( National Stock Exchange ) and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange ), and also there are various other regional players which are not as important as these two above.
Stock Market Participants
Anyone who takes part in stock market activities are known as participants and they are Domestic institutions, Foreign institutions, Domestic Retail participants, Asset management companies etc., Since there are so many players involved, it is important for someone to set up rules and make all these players adhere to it so that it remains fair ground for everyone and that work is done by SEBI ( Securities Exchange Board of India ).
SEBI
1. It makes sure retail investors interests are protected.
2. It makes sure big players do not manipulate markets.
3. It regulates stock market operations and it ensures development of stock exchanges.
4. It ensures that stock brokers and other intermediaries conduct their business freely.
5. Also, It makes sure corporates do not use markets using unfair means.
